The Mystery Ship – A War in Scarlet: Chapter 43

Once on the open seas our heroes are faced with another problem.. or 2.

It’s probably happened to us all. You go on a cruise, take a nap, and then wake up to find that the captain of the ship has disappeared. Pretty common, right? What happened to the captain? And will the Choppy Waters lead them to their doom? It’s Dungeons and Dragons so in all likelihood, yes. Doom is definitely on the way.

While I generally like Brandon’s DMing, I am surprised that with his experience that he would know that the d20 system employed in D&D is not conducive to mystery solving type of adventures. A bad roll can easily stall a game session and cause frustration amongst the players as evidenced in this episode. Design wise, I feel he should’ve incorporated Robin Law’s Gumshoe system for this outing or homebrewed a system where the players do not miss a clue but have to roll perception, insight, etc to interpret said clue.

Now, I understand this particular group of players are impatient when it comes to examination or exploration, and for some reason always oblivious to the most obvious but I feel that the above would’ve help with the general roleplaying and kept the players engaged in solving the mystery rather than being bored and frustrated.
