Heroes of Awesome: Behind The Flame- Chapter 3

It’s time for the first installment of FAN STORIES!!

As a follower of the Heroes of Awesome, you have already read about (and hopefully seen) my first time playing. If not, here’s a look!  🙂

Today, I give you 2 stories, submitted by our awesome viewers, detailing their introduction to D&D.

Spoiler Alert: They started playing WAY before I did.

The first is from Jason V, who definitely got a full-on D&D experience.

My friends had been playing for years in a 2e.  They brought me in during a 2-day sleepover event.  I was like 11 and totally psyched to play. [I bet he could have given Abby a run for her money! Also, can we talk about a weekend-sleepover-DND-marathon? I think the Heroes of Awesome need to give this a try! It sounds awesome!]

They rolled me up a low-level character. I felt like the one normal guy in a world of superheroes, as they were all much higher level.” [Oof. At least Brandon was charitable enough to put me at the same level as everyone else!]

I worked my way from a squire in the eyes of these demi-gods to one of their most trusted enforcers as they attempted to ascend to godhood.” [Kid had mad game.]

“My favorite memory was our cleric’s clever use of cure wounds and cutting fat off a king for medieval liposuction.  [Definitely tucking away that tidbit for later use…torturous medical procedures…maniacal laugh.] I was a warrior with a Vorpal Blade (it can sever heads y’all!) and a custom magic item (shield of Cerebrus – the 3 headed dog from Greek mythology could show up to help once per adventure). I remember having a ton of fun. Probably not in the rules, but it was so much fun our DM allowed it.

I love house rules and creative DMs!

Sounds like Jason had a pretty epic marathon experience. What is the longest continuous game you have played?? Comment below. Winner gets a +d4 added to their next skill check. 🙂

Another contributor, Dyson, had a bit of a different experience…

My cousin’s friends played D&D in the basement of their home back in the late 70’s. It was old school down there, with a sand table from the old war gaming days and everything. [Wait—Sand? Like actual sand??? Someone explain this to me. ]

At 9 years old (let’s all give a collective AWWWW) in 1979, my cousin and I both roll up D&D characters and sit down to play for the first time. The group had a map to an old tomb and was excited to be the first ones to loot it. But some goblins had also managed to acquire a copy in the previous session and we are racing them to the site. [It can be a bit scary to join in an already existing campaign, but he seemed to jump right in! ]

When we arrived, it was obvious that the goblins had beaten us there. So we rushed into the tomb and in the second antechamber we ran into a small squad of goblins setting up camp and stowing supplies while their leaders were ahead figuring out the traps and tricks of the place. [Clearly, we are not the only adventuring party who has to deal with riffraff goblins!]

We didn’t surprise them, but we did win initiative the first round. My cousin and I rushed into the fight (playing twin elven brothers). [That is precious. And BOLD.] My cousin missed his attack, but I got a solid blow in, killing a goblin. However, as I was trying to disentangle my sword from the scrawny marauder, another goblin rushed up and hit me for 2 damage.

That was the end of my character. First character, first session, first round of combat. I was hooked for life. -Dyson

Wait! In what world can 2 damage take somebody out???? Didn’t know that was a thing.  Kira definitely would have never made it 10 seconds in that campaign. RIP little elven bro.

I love that Dyson’s character didn’t even make it out of his first adventure, but it was enough to hook him for life! What’s even greater, is that Jason and Dyson still play and now DM their own adventures! I am continually amazed that this “game” can enrapture 9-year-olds just as well as it can adults of all ages. Pretty cool.

Hope you enjoyed these little tales, we’ve got some more great ones on the way! Many thanks to Dyson and Jason for their contributions! You guys have definitely earned some inspiration.

Adventure on my friends,

Melanie
